A fine jewellery brand needed a store elegant enough for solid gold, and structured enough to hold hundreds of pieces across nine collections.

About the Brand

By Charlotte is an Australian fine jewellery brand built around symbolic, meaningful pieces — lotus motifs, birthstones, birth flowers, zodiac designs — crafted in gold vermeil and solid gold. But the brand is more than a product catalogue. Alongside jewellery sales, By Charlotte offers a full in-person experience: physical boutiques, an Engagement Concierge for personalised ring guidance, and dedicated Piercing Studios working exclusively with 14k solid gold.

That meant the website couldn’t just be an online shop. It had to represent a full retail and service experience — one that feels as considered and premium online as the boutiques do in person.

The Challenge

Fine jewellery isn’t bought casually, and the site had to reflect that — every scroll needed to feel as considered as the pieces themselves. At the same time, the catalogue ran deep: six main jewellery categories, each with four to six curated sub-collections, alongside services that exist entirely outside the shop, like engagement appointments and piercing bookings.

  • Present a large, deeply-categorised jewellery catalogue without it feeling like a maze
  • Make the site feel as premium and considered as the fine jewellery it sells
  • Integrate services beyond the catalogue — engagement concierge bookings, boutique visits, piercing studio appointments, gift wrapping
  • Support an omnichannel customer who wants Click & Collect, same-day delivery, or an in-boutique appointment, not just a shipped box
  • Keep the site fast and elegant despite heavy use of high-end product photography and layered navigation

Our Approach

We built a deep mega-menu structure — Jewellery broken into Necklaces, Earrings, Rings, Bracelets, Charms & Pendants, and Anklets, each further split into curated sub-collections like Lotus, Pearl, Birthstone, Birth Flower, and Zodiac — so a shopper looking specifically for “pinky rings” or “birthstone necklaces” can get there in one click, rather than filtering through a flat catalogue.

The homepage was built to balance new and proven: seasonal campaign imagery for launches like “The Pinky Edit” sits alongside a bestsellers carousel and a dedicated “Keepsakes In Focus” section for the solid gold range. Beyond the shop itself, we gave engagement appointments, boutique visits, piercing studio bookings, and gift wrapping their own dedicated “Boutiques & Services” section — treated as first-class parts of the site, not buried in a footer link.

Key Features Delivered

1. Deep, Organised Mega-Menu

Six jewellery categories, each broken into curated sub-collections, so shoppers reach exactly what they’re after — Diamond Rings, Locket Pendants, Zodiac Necklaces — without hunting.

2. Seasonal Campaign-Led Homepage

Rotating hero banners for new launches give collections like “The Pinky Edit” the spotlight, without pushing evergreen bestsellers off the page.

3. Bestsellers & Keepsakes Merchandising

A bestsellers carousel plus a dedicated “Keepsakes In Focus” section for the solid gold range, guiding both first-time and repeat shoppers toward proven favourites.

4. Boutiques & Services Hub

Engagement Concierge, boutique visits, Piercing Studios, and Gift Wrapping each get their own dedicated card and booking pathway, turning in-person services into a core part of the site.

5. Omnichannel Fulfilment Messaging

Same Day Delivery, Click & Collect across Emporium, Paddington & Robina, Easy Returns, and Afterpay are called out clearly, matching how customers actually shop a brand with physical boutiques.

6. Considered Loyalty Sign-Up

A “Join By Charlotte” sign-up flow offering early access and personal invites — built for long-term customer relationships, not just a one-time discount pop-up.

7. First-Visit Welcome Offer

A “Sign Up for 10% Off” pop-up greets every new visitor the moment the site loads — pairing a first-purchase incentive with early access to sales and personal invites, so email capture starts on the very first visit instead of waiting for checkout.

Technology Stack

A stack chosen for a catalogue and customer base that has outgrown a basic online shop — built to support heavy traffic, a deep product range, and a genuinely omnichannel retail experience.

  • Shopify Plus — built for catalogue depth and traffic volume beyond standard Shopify
  • Custom theme development — elegant, editorial visual identity matched to fine jewellery photography
  • Multi-level mega-menu architecture — six categories, each with multiple curated sub-collections
  • Afterpay / Buy Now Pay Later integration — “Layer Now, Pay Later” checkout flexibility
  • Store locator & Click & Collect integration — connecting online browsing with physical boutiques
  • Appointment/booking integration — for Engagement Concierge and Piercing Studio bookings
  • Wishlist & account functionality
  • Responsive, mobile-first design
  • SEO fundamentals — structured metadata and collection-based URL architecture

Under the Hood

Beyond the visible stack, a handful of technical decisions did the real work of keeping a jewellery-scale catalogue fast, discoverable, and easy for the in-house team to run day-to-day.

  • Liquid-based theming with modular sections — each homepage block (bestsellers, Keepsakes In Focus, Boutiques & Services) built as a reusable, merchandiser-editable section rather than hard-coded markup
  • Metafields-driven navigation — collection and sub-collection structure powered by Shopify metafields, so new drops (a new Zodiac piece, a new birthstone edit) slot into the mega-menu without a developer touching the menu code
  • Faceted search & filtering — Shopify’s native search layer extended with tagging so results stay accurate across overlapping categories like “Birthstone” and “Rings”
  • Lazy-loaded, responsive image pipeline — Shopify CDN srcset delivery sized per breakpoint, keeping image-heavy pages fast on mobile data without visibly compressing product photography
  • Structured data (schema.org) markup — Product, Offer, and Breadcrumb schema on collection and product pages, feeding rich results (price, availability, ratings) directly into search
  • Core Web Vitals-conscious build — critical CSS inlined, deferred non-essential scripts, and render-blocking third-party apps (reviews, chat) loaded post-paint to protect load speed and LCP
  • App-based service integrations — Afterpay via native Shopify payment integration, plus third-party apps for appointment booking (Engagement Concierge, Piercing Studios) and email capture, kept isolated from theme code so updates don’t risk breaking the storefront
  • Multi-location inventory sync — Click & Collect stock status pulled live per boutique (Emporium, Paddington, Robina) through Shopify’s multi-location inventory API
  • Session-based pop-up logic — the first-visit “10% Off” sign-up modal fires once per session (not on every page load), with a cookie/local-storage check so returning visitors and logged-in customers aren’t repeatedly interrupted

The Result

By Charlotte now has a site that carries the same considered feel as its boutiques, whether a customer is browsing birthstone rings at midnight or booking an engagement concierge appointment. The catalogue stays navigable at real depth, and the services that make the brand more than a shop finally have a proper home online.

  • ✓ A deep, easy-to-navigate mega-menu across six categories and dozens of sub-collections
  • ✓ A homepage that balances seasonal campaigns with evergreen bestsellers
  • ✓ A dedicated Boutiques & Services hub for engagement, piercing, and gift experiences
  • ✓ Clear omnichannel messaging — Click & Collect, Same Day Delivery, Afterpay
  • ✓ A considered loyalty sign-up flow built for long-term customer relationships
  • ✓ A visual identity elegant enough to match the fine jewellery it showcases

Conclusion

Fine jewellery is bought with both the eye and the heart — a customer needs to see the craftsmanship and trust the experience behind it. By pairing deep, considered catalogue navigation with a genuine sense of the brand’s in-person world — boutiques, concierge, piercing studios — we helped By Charlotte build a website that feels less like an online shop and more like stepping into the store itself.
