A “melanin-first” skincare brand needed a store built to carry a founder’s story with the same weight as its clinical claims.

About the Brand

Asaya is a skincare brand built on a premise most of the industry had quietly skipped: melanin-rich skin needs formulations of its own, not a translated Western routine. The brand was born from its co-founder’s own experience with adult acne at 35, when neither expert advice nor imported products brought any relief, a gap that turned into the idea for Asaya.

The range (clinically tested serums, treatments, moisturisers, sunscreens, and cleansers) is built around real skin concerns rather than product categories alone: pigmentation, acne, dehydration, dullness, fine lines, and sun protection, anchored by the brand’s own proprietary active platform for pigmentation care.

The Challenge

A brand with a genuinely different point of view needed a site that didn’t just look like every other beauty D2C store. The catalogue itself was wide (serums, treatments, moisturisers, sunscreens, cleansers, combos) and had to stay easy to shop, while a deeply personal founder story needed to sit credibly next to hard clinical claims like “fades spots in 14 days.”

  • Reflect a distinct “melanin-first” positioning without it reading like generic beauty-brand language
  • Present a wide catalogue across multiple product types without turning navigation into a maze
  • Let visitors shop by what’s actually bothering them (pigmentation, acne, dullness), not just by product type
  • Carry a personal founder story with the same credibility as clinical, results-backed claims
  • Build enough first-time trust for someone to add a skincare product to cart, sight unseen
  • Grow organic search traffic and keep the brand visible on social media, so the store keeps attracting new customers after launch

Our Approach

We started with the brand’s own point of difference, melanin-rich skin needing its own formulations, and let that idea shape the information architecture, not just the homepage copy. “Shop by Concern” became a primary way to browse, sitting alongside conventional product-type categories, so a visitor could arrive knowing only “I have dark spots” and still land on the right shelf.

A focused team of 3-4 designers, developers, and SEO & social media specialists worked on this project, from brand research to launch and ongoing growth.

Alongside that, we gave the brand’s storytelling its own dedicated space, separate from the sales pages, so the founder’s journey and the brand’s skin science could be read on their own terms, then reinforced with the kind of social proof (reviews, press mentions, a rewards programme) that turns a first-time visitor into a repeat customer.

Once the store was live, we also took on the website’s SEO and the brand’s social media, so the same story told on the site is carried consistently across search results and social platforms.

Key Features Delivered

1. Concern-First Navigation

Depigmentation, Acne, Wrinkles & Fine Lines, Dehydration, Dullness, and Sun Protection sit right in the main menu, so people shop by problem, not just by product type.

2. Founder-Led Brand Storytelling

Dedicated “Our Story” and “Our Skin Science” pages carry the melanin-first narrative with the same weight the product pages give to clinical claims.

3. Review-Rich Product Pages

Hundreds of verified reviews surfaced directly on bestselling products, turning social proof into a genuine reason to buy rather than a buried footnote.

4. Branded Active Spotlight

The brand’s proprietary pigmentation-care platform gets its own navigation slot and dedicated page, treated as a hero, not an ingredient list entry.

5. Loyalty & Rewards Integration

A rewards programme built directly into the shopping experience, designed to turn first-time buyers into repeat customers.

6. Trust & Safety Signage

Clear anti-fraud notices and verified contact channels built into the footer, addressing a real, common pain point in D2C: fake sellers and phishing messages riding on a brand’s name.

Technology Stack

A stack built around Shopify’s strengths: fast checkout, reliable cart handling, and a content team that can update products and collections without waiting on a developer.

  • Shopify: core e-commerce platform, cart & checkout
  • Custom Shopify theme: built around the brand’s warm, editorial visual identity
  • Collection & tag-based architecture: letting concern-based and product-type browsing coexist without duplicate catalogues
  • Rewards/loyalty app integration: built into the core shopping flow
  • Video-enabled product listings: short clips showing texture and application, not just packaging
  • Responsive, mobile-first design
  • SEO fundamentals: structured metadata and keyword-aligned collection pages

SEO & Social Media Management

Beyond the build, we took on Asaya’s search visibility and social presence as a continuous engagement rather than a one-off deliverable.

  • SEO for the website: keyword-aligned collection and product pages, structured metadata, and concern-based content so shoppers searching for problems like pigmentation or acne can find the brand
  • Social media management: content planning and a consistent posting calendar across platforms
  • On-brand creative: graphics, reels, and captions that match the site’s warm, editorial visual identity
  • Performance tracking across search and social to see what works and refine the plan over time
  • One consistent brand voice carried across the website, search listings, and every social touchpoint

The Result

Asaya now has a store that shops the way its customers actually think, by concern first, while giving the brand’s founder story and clinical credibility equal space to be heard. The result is a site that feels less like a product catalogue and more like a brand making its case. With SEO and social media handled alongside the build, that case now reaches people through search and social too, not just direct visits.

  • ✓ A concern-first shopping experience across a wide skincare catalogue
  • ✓ Founder storytelling and clinical credibility carried with equal weight
  • ✓ Review-backed product pages built for first-time buyer confidence
  • ✓ A loyalty programme integrated into the core shopping flow
  • ✓ Clear trust and anti-fraud signage addressing a real D2C pain point
  • ✓ A distinct visual identity that doesn’t blend into generic beauty-brand design
  • ✓ An SEO-optimised store structure built to grow organic visibility
  • ✓ A planned, ongoing social media presence aligned with the brand’s voice

Conclusion

Asaya’s whole premise is that melanin-rich skin deserves formulations built for it, not borrowed ones, and that idea needed a website willing to make the same argument, not just sell the products that come from it. By putting concerns before categories and letting the founder’s story stand next to the clinical claims, we helped Asaya build a store that argues its case as confidently as the brand itself does. With SEO and social media supporting it, that argument now reaches more of the people who need to hear it.
